Common buyer questions.
What is cove lighting?
Cove lighting hides a linear source in a recess, ledge or drop so the light washes across the ceiling or wall and no fixture is visible. It provides soft, indirect ambient fill and is what gives a ceiling that floating appearance.
How deep does a cove need to be?
As a rule, the cove should be at least 100–150mm deep with the source set back far enough that the LED is not visible from anywhere in the room. Allow 50–75mm between the source and the lip, and keep the ceiling face above it smooth — a shallow cove produces visible scallops.
Should cove lighting use strip or linear profile?
Profile, in almost every case. An aluminium profile acts as a heat sink, holds the strip straight, and takes a diffuser that hides individual LEDs. Bare strip stuck into a cove sags, runs hotter and shows dots along the run.
What colour temperature suits cove lighting?
3000K for living rooms, bedrooms and hospitality; 4000K where the space is more functional. Keep the cove at the same colour temperature as the downlights in the same room — mismatched CCT within one ceiling is the most visible error in residential lighting.
