How do I light a garden path without it looking like a runway?

Stagger fixtures alternately along the two sides rather than placing them in facing pairs, and space them at two to three times their mounting height. Vary the effect by mixing path lights with occasional uplighting on adjacent planting.

What is the right mounting height for a path light?

Between 450 and 900mm for most garden paths. Lower fixtures light a tighter pool and read more discreetly; taller ones cover more ground but become visually prominent and increase the risk of glare.

What IP rating do landscape path lights need?

IP65 minimum, and IP67 for anything sitting in an irrigated bed or a low spot where water collects. The cable entry is the usual failure point, so use fixtures with a proper sealed gland rather than a grommet.

Should path lighting be on a separate circuit?

It is worth it. Landscape lighting is usually wanted on a dusk-to-late schedule rather than all night, and separating it from security lighting lets each run on its own timer or photocell without compromise.
