When should I choose concealed rather than surface underwater lights?

Choose concealed where the pool is still being built and you want no visible fixture body — the light sits in a cast niche and finishes flush with the wall. Surface fixtures are the retrofit option for an existing pool.

What IP rating do concealed underwater fixtures need?

IP68, rated for continuous submersion at the depth they will sit. Confirm the rated depth as well as the IP number — IP68 is defined by the manufacturer against a stated depth, not a universal standard.

Can concealed underwater lights be serviced later?

Yes, but the niche has to be designed for it. Specify a fixture with a serviceable front assembly and leave a cable loop in the niche so the unit can be drawn out for lamp or gasket replacement without draining more than the top of the pool.

Do concealed fixtures need a transformer?

Yes. They run on 12V or 24V SELV, so a transformer sits outside the pool zone in a dry, ventilated position. Size it with headroom above the connected load and keep the cable run short to avoid voltage drop across the circuit.
