What does a linear wall washer do?

It produces an even vertical wash of light across a wall or facade from a linear fixture mounted close to the surface. The point is uniformity — a properly specified wall washer lights the full height of the surface without visible scallops or hot spots.

How far from the wall should a wall washer be mounted?

Usually 150–400mm out from the surface, depending on the wall height and the optic. Mounting too close produces a bright band at the top and darkness below; too far and the fixture reads as a separate object rather than washing the surface.

What is the difference between wall washing and wall grazing?

Washing places the fixture further from the wall for even, flat illumination that plays down texture. Grazing places it very close so light rakes across the surface and exaggerates texture — right for stone, brick and fluted concrete, wrong for smooth plaster.

What IP rating do outdoor wall washers need?

IP65 minimum, IP66 where the fixture sits at ground level and could be hit by splash-back or irrigation. Linear fixtures have long gasket runs, so gasket quality matters more here than on a compact fixture.
