It refers to a fixture sealed against three things: water, dust and corrosion. Tri-proof battens use a sealed polycarbonate body with stainless or coated clips, which is why they survive washdown areas, car parks and damp plant rooms where a standard batten would fail.
Car parks, basements, service corridors, warehouses, cold rooms, wash bays and covered external walkways. Anywhere the atmosphere is damp, dusty or corrosive, or where the fixture will be hosed down as part of cleaning.
Typically IP65 or IP66. For food-preparation and washdown areas, confirm the rating covers pressure washing rather than splash alone, and check the gasket material is suitable for any cleaning chemicals used.
Battens are commonly 2ft, 4ft and 5ft. In a car park or corridor, run them end to end for a continuous line, or space them at roughly one to one and a half times the mounting height where continuous light is not needed.
