What is the difference between track lighting and magnetic track?
Conventional track uses a 240V busbar with heads that clamp and twist into place — robust, widely available and good for retail. Magnetic track runs at 48V low voltage with heads that attach magnetically, giving a slimmer profile and easier repositioning. Magnetic suits residential and gallery work; conventional suits high-output retail.
Where does track lighting work best?
Retail displays, galleries, showrooms and studios — anywhere the things being lit move regularly. It is also useful in rooms with concrete slabs where recessing is not possible, since track surface-mounts or suspends.
Can track lights be dimmed?
Yes, provided the heads and the circuit driver support it. On a multi-circuit track you can also split heads across separate circuits so accent and general lighting dim independently. Confirm the dimming protocol before selecting the wall dimmer.
How much light does a track need for a retail display?
Aim for an accent-to-ambient ratio of about 3:1 for gentle emphasis, and 5:1 or more for a strong focal display. Beam angle matters as much as wattage — a narrow 24-degree head at modest output usually reads better than a wide flood at high output.
