Where are bulkhead lights typically used?

Stairwells, service corridors, plant rooms, external walkways, boundary walls and utility areas — positions that need robust, low-maintenance light rather than a decorative effect.

What makes a bulkhead different from a normal wall light?

Construction. Bulkheads use a sealed body with a polycarbonate diffuser and are built for impact resistance and water ingress, which is why they carry both IP and IK ratings. A decorative wall light is chosen for appearance; a bulkhead is chosen for durability.

What IK rating should I look for?

IK08 for general external use, IK10 where vandalism or accidental impact is a real risk — service corridors, public stairwells and car parks. IK10 fixtures use thicker polycarbonate and stronger fixings.

Can bulkheads be fitted with a sensor?

Yes, many are available with an integrated microwave sensor, which suits stairwells and corridors where lighting is only needed when someone is present. Set an adequate hold-on time so the light does not drop out mid-flight on a staircase.
