Common buyer questions.
Where do floor and table lamps fit in a lighting scheme?
They provide the lowest layer — light at seated eye level that ceiling fixtures cannot deliver. A room lit only from the ceiling reads flat in the evening; lamps add depth and let you drop the overhead level without losing usable light.
What height should a reading lamp be?
The bottom of the shade should sit at roughly eye level when seated — about 1.0 to 1.2 metres from the floor for a floor lamp beside a chair, and 600–700mm total height for a table lamp on a standard side table. Too high and the bulb is visible; too low and the light falls short of the page.
Should lamps be on a switched circuit?
Ideally yes. Putting lamp sockets on a wall switch or a smart plug means the whole layer comes on together rather than requiring each lamp to be switched individually. It is a small provision at first-fix that makes a noticeable difference to how the room is used.
What colour temperature suits lamps?
2700K to 3000K. Lamps are the warmest layer in the room and are used mainly in the evening, so they should read warmer than, or equal to, the ceiling lighting. A cool lamp beside a warm ceiling looks wrong immediately.
