Where are outdoor surface ceiling lights used?

Under porches, canopies, covered walkways, balcony soffits and car-park ceilings — anywhere there is an overhead surface but insufficient depth to recess a fixture. They are the outdoor equivalent of a surface downlight.

What IP rating do soffit-mounted fixtures need?

IP54 is usually sufficient under a genuinely sheltered soffit. Use IP65 for open canopies and anywhere driving rain can reach the fixture, which in monsoon conditions is most positions that are not fully enclosed.

How far apart should soffit lights be spaced?

Roughly 1 to 1.5 times the mounting height apart for even coverage. Under a 3-metre canopy that means about 3 to 4.5 metres between fixtures — closer if the surface below needs an even lit appearance rather than pools of light.

Can these fixtures be used in a car park?

Yes, provided the IP rating suits the exposure and the fixture carries an appropriate impact rating for the mounting height. For parking areas, also check the fixture is rated for the ambient temperature range, which can be high in an enclosed deck.
