What is the difference between recessed step lights and walkover lights?

Recessed step lights are set into the riser of a step or into a wall at low level and are not designed to be walked on. Walkover fixtures are set into the tread or paving and are rated for foot and sometimes vehicle load, so they carry both an IP and an IK rating.

What IP and IK ratings do walkover lights need?

IP67 as a minimum for anything set into paving, since water will pond over it. For load, IK08 or above for foot traffic and a stated vehicle load rating if a car will cross it. Check both — a high IP rating says nothing about impact strength.

How far apart should step lights be spaced?

On a staircase, one fixture every second or third riser is usually enough — the aim is to make the edge of each tread readable, not to light the whole flight. On a path, 1.5 to 3 metres apart depending on the beam spread.

Will recessed step lights cause glare?

They can if the source is visible from eye level. Choose fixtures with a recessed emitter and an internal louvre, and aim them downward across the tread rather than outward. A step light that dazzles is worse than no step light.
