When should I use surface step lights instead of recessed?

Surface fixtures mount onto a finished wall or riser without cutting into the structure, which makes them the practical choice for retrofits and for masonry that cannot be chased. They also allow a directional shade to control where the light falls.

What mounting height suits a surface step light?

Typically 200–400mm above the tread for stair lighting, and 300–600mm for a path edge. Higher than that and the fixture starts lighting the person rather than the surface, which increases glare and reduces the useful effect.

What IP rating do surface step lights need?

IP65 for a wall-mounted position under an overhang, IP66 where the fixture is fully exposed to driving rain. Because they sit proud of the wall, the fixing points and the rear gasket are where water gets in — check both are sealed.

Can surface step lights be dimmed?

Many can, subject to the driver supplied. On external circuits it is often more useful to put them on a photocell or timer than a dimmer, so they come on at dusk and switch off late without anyone operating a switch.
