Are underwater pool lights safe?

Yes, when correctly specified. Pool and fountain fixtures must be IP68-rated for continuous submersion, run on 12V or 24V SELV low voltage, and be installed on a circuit with an appropriate RCD. Never use IP65 or IP67 fixtures underwater — those ratings cover splash and temporary immersion only.

What is the difference between surface and concealed underwater lights?

Surface-mounted fixtures bolt onto the pool wall or floor and can be retrofitted to an existing pool. Concealed fixtures sit in a niche cast into the structure, so they sit flush but must be planned before the pool is built.

What colour temperature suits a swimming pool?

Cooler temperatures around 6000K make the water read blue and crisp, which suits a modern pool. Warmer 3000K reads softer and works better where the pool sits within a landscaped garden. RGB fixtures allow both, but the fixed-white result is usually cleaner.

How many underwater lights does a pool need?

As a guide, one fixture per 3 to 4 metres of pool wall for even illumination, mounted 300–450mm below the water line. Deeper pools and dark-finish pools need more, because the surface absorbs rather than reflects the light.
