What is the difference between a PIR and a microwave sensor?
PIR sensors detect body heat moving across their field of view and need line of sight, which makes them reliable and resistant to false triggers. Microwave sensors detect motion through reflected radio waves and can sense through thin partitions and glass, so they suit washroom cubicles, stairwells and enclosed corridors.
How much energy do occupancy sensors actually save?
Occupancy sensing typically cuts lighting energy by 30 to 50 per cent in corridors, washrooms, stairwells and meeting rooms — spaces that are lit far longer than they are used. Combining occupancy with daylight sensing on perimeter zones can push savings past 60 per cent in a daylit office.
Can Sensinova sensors control fixtures from other brands?
Yes. The sensors switch or dim the circuit, so they work with any compatible driver regardless of fixture brand. What matters is matching the sensor output to the driver protocol — we confirm that pairing at specification stage when the scheme mixes brands.
Where should sensors not be used?
Avoid occupancy sensing where a sudden switch-off is a safety risk, and avoid mounting PIR sensors directly above heat sources or in the path of air-conditioning, which causes false triggers. For long-dwell spaces such as offices, specify true-presence rather than basic motion detection.
